Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9x9 inch baking pan.
- Toss diced apples with 1 tbsp flour and ½ tsp cinnamon in a bowl to coat evenly.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly using fingers or a fork.
- Press half the streusel mix firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
- Spread apple mixture evenly over the base layer.
- Sprinkle remaining streusel over apples evenly to cover.
- Bake for 40 minutes until golden brown and fragrant. Let cool before slicing.
Notes
Swap flour for gluten-free blend and use vegan butter to adapt for dietary needs. Add pecans for extra crunch or try coconut sugar for a less refined option. Store between parchment layers if freezing to protect the streusel. Great warm or cold, with or without ice cream.
