Ingredients

  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 0.75 cup dark brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp flour (for tossing apples)
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

  • mixing bowls
  • 9x9 baking pan
  • fork or pastry cutter
  • knife
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • oven mitts

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9x9 inch baking pan.
  2. Toss diced apples with 1 tbsp flour and ½ tsp cinnamon in a bowl to coat evenly.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly using fingers or a fork.
  4. Press half the streusel mix firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  5. Spread apple mixture evenly over the base layer.
  6. Sprinkle remaining streusel over apples evenly to cover.
  7. Bake for 40 minutes until golden brown and fragrant. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

Swap flour for gluten-free blend and use vegan butter to adapt for dietary needs. Add pecans for extra crunch or try coconut sugar for a less refined option. Store between parchment layers if freezing to protect the streusel. Great warm or cold, with or without ice cream.
