Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples, sliced (peeled or unpeeled)
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or almond flour for GF)
  • 0.5 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 0.25 cup boiling water

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • baking dish
  • fork or pastry cutter
  • oven mitts
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Because cold ovens lead to underbaked dessert.
  2. Toss apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into a greased baking dish. No need to arrange neatly.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix flour and butter with a fork or your fingers until crumbly.
  5. Sprinkle the topping over the apples, then pour boiling water evenly on top.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes until the top is golden and crisp, and your kitchen smells amazing.

Notes

Swap apples for peaches, pears, or berries. Vegan? Use coconut oil instead of butter. Gluten-free? Almond flour works. Reduce sugar for a lower-sugar version. Add cranberries or walnuts for extra flair. Assemble ahead and bake later for convenience.
